Ik kon deze natuurlijk niet voorbij laten gaan zonder er aandacht aan te besteden: vandaag heeft MSN (blijkbaar een dag eerder dan gepland) de bèta van MSN Virtual Earth beschikbaar gesteld. De aankondiging heb je al op verschillende sites kunnen lezen (Marketingfacts, Webdrain, Micro Persuasion en natuurlijk Robert himself). Iemand schijnt het in zijn bol gehaald te hebben het een Google Maps-killer te noemen, die was vast heel vroeg wakker. En D’Arcy Norman heeft zich er heel boos over gemaakt. Tijd dus voor een vergelijking van de twee kemphanen.

Hierboven zie je een aantal screenshots uit MSN Virtual Earth. Om maar met de conclusie te beginnen: het is voorlopig nog zeker geen concurrent van Google Maps. Het enig sterke punt is dat er foto’s beschikbaar zijn die veel meer detail tonen dan Google Maps. Maar het aantal van die foto’s is nog erg beperkt.
Ik heb een side-by-side vergelijking gemaakt, die je als Flash bestand kunt bekijken. Het is een groot bestand (22MB) het duurt dus helaas nogal lang voordat hij begint met afspelen. Ik zal kijken of ik vanavond een nog wat kleinere versie kan produceren. Het geluid is overigens weer knudde en dat ligt niet eens aan het feit dat ik hem voor de verandering eens in het Engels ingesproken heb.

De conclusies aan het eind:
* MSN Virtual Earth biedt in sommige gevallen hogere detailfoto’s.
* MSN Virtual Earth heeft op het moment nog veel minder detailfoto’s dan Google Maps.
* Iets vinden op MSN Virtual Earth is nagenoeg onmogelijk, bij Google Maps gaat dat prima.
* Google heeft met de tandem Maps + Earth een sterk duo met zowel 2D als 3D-weergaves. MSN kan op het moment alleen 2D bieden
* Het beschikbaar hebben van een API waarmee je op Google Maps zelf bijvoorbeeld foto’s, markers en routes kunt plaatsen is een sterk punt ten opzichte van andere kaart-diensten. MSN doet er dus goed aan om er snel voor te zorgen dat zij ook een API voor Virtual Earth krijgen.
Maar, we zullen zien hoe het over een maand of drie uitziet. Het is natuurlijk pas een begin al is het zeker nog geen Google Maps-killer.
English translation
Even though I’m leaving for my vacation tomorrow I couldn’t resist posting about this: Today MSN (apparently a day earlier than planned) has released the beta of MSN Virtual Earth. You probably have seen the announcement on several sites/blogs (Marketingfacts – in Dutch, Webdrain – in Dutch, Micro Persuasion and of course Robert himself). Someone said it was a Google Maps killer, but that was probably before his first coffee for the day. And D’Arcy Norman got very angry about it. Time for a side by side comparison.
Above you see a number of screenshorts of MSN Virtual Earth. To start with the final conclusion: at the moment it is far from being a match for Google Maps. The only real strong feature it has it that it sometimes shows pictures with a higher level of detail, but the number of pictures where it does that is too limited.
I created a side by side comparison earlier today using Macromedia Captivate and published it to Flash. It is a big file (22MB) so it will probably take some time to download. Sound is not perfect as usual not just because this was the first one that I did in English.

The results of the jury:
* MSN Virtual Earth sometimes offers pictures in higher detail.
* The number of high detail pictures on MSN Virtual Earth is too limited.
* Finding a place using MSN Virtual Earth is virtually impossible. Google Maps does that much better.
* Google has the duo Maps + Earth and can offer both 2D and 3D-views. MSN at the moment only offers 2D pictures.
* Having an API that allows me to put pictures, marks and routes on a Google Maps is an important selling point. So MSN better makes sure it releases an API soon!
But, lets wait a couple of months, this is only the beginning even though it isn’t a Google Maps killer.

I notice in your example, you use the "What" box to search for the White House and the "where" to type Washington DC.
Currently, you have to type "White House, Washington DC" in the "Where" box – which takes you right to it. Perfectly.
This is perhaps a minor flaw, because it’s unintuitive… intially (I also tried to find the White House) I did it your way, and then tested the other way.
Still; I found that using the "Where" box in MSN Virtual Earth was FAR better than Google. By lengths.
Michael, if the site was up I would try to see how MSN was able to find it "FAR" better than Google, because that would be a VERY impressive result. Don’t know if I would call this a minor flaw though.
It looks like MSN does have something that is moving towards an API, see this page with a first example. But this part of the example "In order to do a search we can use the Virtual Earth Search Manager. The only downside of this is that we need to access content that is out side of our domain and that will bring up a security warning to the end user.
IMPORTANT: This will only work if the browser allows cross domain data access. By default many browsers don’t allow this." makes me want to stay away from that part of the functionality for now.
@Michael: OK, it is up again. So I checked. Search simply is not working as it should. I searched for "White House, Washington DC" in the Where box while hovering over Washington DC. And it doesn’t find it. If I only enter "White House", then it gives me a list and yes in that list, there is also the one in Washington DC. If I click on that link it shows the White House. And since that is in the middle of the screen I can zoom down. BUT, how is this better than what Maps does?
