“Stanford University announced today the Open Source release of its course management system, CourseWork. CourseWork is a simple-to-use, robust, scalable system for faculty to develop and present on-line course materials. With the Open Source release, the code is now available for any school to install and customize the system, enabling it to provide instructional web sites for all its courses. Developed by Stanford’s Academic Computing group, CourseWork has been officially used by the campus since January 2002. The CourseWork implementation at Stanford has been rapidly adopted by faculty in a wide range of academic disciplines. In spring of 2003, it supported over 12,000 users of over 400 course web sites. With CourseWork, faculty can create course home pages, send e-mail announcements, develop syllabi and schedules, distribute and evaluate assignments, organize course materials, and manage grades.”(bron)
Het is de moeite waard een kijkje te nemen naar de screendumps bij deze nieuwe open source leeromgeving. Het lijkt namelijk of weer iemand Blackboard of WebCT heeft proberen na te bouwen, maar dan zonder de bijbehorende licentiekosten. En er was laatst nog wel iemand die Blackboard een dead-end applicatie noemde. Het is jammer dat ze niet twee vliegen in één klap geslagen hebben ook meteen de mogelijkheden voor onderwijskundige vernieuwing ingebouwd hebben.
